Cutting Edge

Alright, due to popular vote, I've made a picture for the Cutting Edge scene, following up my B-Movie drawing: [link]

Late in the movie our main characters, after escaping the clutches of Elmo St. Peters, finally reach the city where the Master lives. When they finally find out where he lives they find that he's not home. Coincidentally he'd left with his girlfriend Chis for the very cabin the main character's had left. It's here that Toaster and the gang meet the Master's NEW appliances.

Knowing that the Master wants to take the main characters with him to Collage instead of them, the new cutting edge appliances become jealous and hide it behind a vale of extreme egotism, boasting about how much more advanced they are and demoralizing the main characters. After the music number of the same name, the cutting edge appliances kick Toaster and the gang out the window of the apartment and into a dumpster where they're taken to Ernie's Disposal.

I'm a little bit torn about this drawing, I can't decide if I'm proud of it or not. I was extremely pleased with how B-Movie came out.. everything just seemed to fall into place. and look really well arranged. This one is a tad bit more clustered looking to me, though that could be due to the unique lay out and of this picture.

I remember talking to my friend *Bobcatgirl03 one time, she explained that one reason she didn't like the Cutting Edge scene as much as the others is because of it's disconnect with the reality of the movie. You may remember during the song quite a big of surreal things happen... random stuff falling out of the sky, a jet-liner crashing through the wall, the main characters being zipped around weird geometric environments... things that obviously aren't going on in the reality of the movie.

I can definitely understand where she's coming from, though I think it was done with good reason, to kinda show the how technology is making things more and more simulated and virtual.. perhaps that's the idea they were going with?

Anyway so this is my own take on that idea, kinda having our helpless main characters trapped in this 'checkerboard cutting-edge void' .. or maybe a MORE-void. XD While this actual event of the main characters being miniaturized and toyed with never happens in the movie.. I think it fits the feel of the song. The gigantic cutting edge appliances inflated by ego toying with our outdated main heroes like the little nothings they see them as.

The geometry actually came out quite nice, hopefully it shows up alright in black and white. Pretty much the main characters are scurrying around on a platform of checker-board floor (checkerboard playing a big part in that musical scene) with individual pieces of the board breaking loose and floating a way in the void. You might notice some of the other appliances floating on broken off sections such as the sewing machine.

Toaster and Blankey are near the right side being totally freaked out by the telephones gigantic eyeball staring at them. XD Kerby is above them, feeling a big inferior to the cutting edge Vacuum staring him down. Radio is trying to hide near the middle there, oh and Lampy is possibly about to get squashed by a biscuit dropped by the food processor. XDD

I'm happy that I did manage to get almost every character on here, if you don't count the rear-end half of the cutting-edge vacuum, the hand-held blender who was only in the scene for 2 seconds.. and the two ceiling lights who are semi-personified as alive... then the only character I left out was the Boom-box... unfortunately. I wish I'd found room to get that character in there somewhere. -.o; But still!
